Get a Grip on Turnovers

Minimizing turnovers could be the difference between winning and losing. Unless you’re playing in a dome stadium, weather can play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of a game. Cold weather can turn a soft leather ball into a rock hard projectile and wet weather can turn an otherwise dry football into a greased pig. The team that wins the turnover battle, wins the game 70% of the time. What you might not know is that one additional turnover forced or avoided adds .207 to your win percentage by the end of the season. In a recent study (Zach Levine) analyzing the effects of turnovers, results showed that a turnover is equivalent to roughly 4 points and improving your turnover margin by 1 per game is the same as improving your net yardage by roughly 77 yards per game.

 

Dry-Warm Ball Advantage

A dry ball provides superior grip and greater friction. A wet ball can weigh as much as 30% more than a dry ball and have travel distances of 25% less than a dry ball. Hang time, point of release and point of contact are also adversely effected by the moisture content of the ball. In football, this is evident even in the mildest of wet or cold conditions (recently watered fields, fog or dew). In extreme conditions, such as rain or snow, the advantages of a dry ball are obvious.
